An Improved Satellite‐Based Evapotranspiration Procedure for China

Evapotranspiration (ET) is a critical process that regulates the transfer of heat and water between land atmosphere. While satellite-based ET algorithms can provide area-wide daily estimates, few are independent local meteorological measurements. The Variant Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer Standard Algorithm (VISEA) potentially run without ground-based observations. However, surface energy budgets used in VISEA generally overpredict net radiation related ET. To improve accuracy ET, we incorporated Brutsaert's atmosphere emissivity model corrected routine to calculate downward long-wave on cloudy days (which called VISEA2023 model). predicted agreed well with measurements at seven ChinaFlux sites, an R2 0.8 Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) 30 W m−2 for radiation, 0.6 RMSE 1 mm day−1 respectively. Additionally, more robust comparison Variable Infiltration Capacity hydrologic output 10 major river basins 80 sub-river basins, 0.91 (0.78) 85 (127.4) year−1, than MOD16, which has 0.81 (0.82) 134.8 (157.7) Advanced Very High Radiometer 0.92 (0.62) 90.1 (136.1) year−1. improved offer near-real-time larger scale, improving our understanding cycles their relation climate change.
